Unmasking Foxy Bingo – The End Of A Bingo Icon

When Peter Capaldi announced he was stepping down as the 12th Doctor, the clamour for the first female to take the role began once again. The folks in Foxy Bingo’s marketing department must have been checking out the column inches when they came together to decide the next campaign for the well known brand.

For years now, Foxy of Foxy Bingo and Foxy Casino fame has been thought of as a man. A man with a Northern accent who’s gone through a series of dodgy suits and transformations to become quite a sophisticated dancing fox. On March 9th all that will be blown out of the water when Foxy Bingo launch a brand new TV advert and they will reveal the person inside the suit.

Hello Foxy Bingo Lady

That person will be none other than Hollywood A-Lister, Heather Graham. Now there’s no denying that the star of Boogie Nights, The Hangover and Austin Powers is a pretty foxy lady, but revealing her as a male purple suited fox impersonator with a Northern accent is taking a serious risk with the brand.

Yes it’s funny! Yes it’s a big revamp! Yes it’s Heather Graham! But yes it’s the end of a bingo icon as we know it. The simple fact is that if this one year campaign goes to pot then where does it leave the Foxy character. You can’t just put the Fox head back on and pretend it was all a bad dream.

Goodybye Jeremy Kyle

The Foxy character has been a massive part of bingo since the year dot. We’ve seen him look like a dodgy pimp, we’ve seen him ruin You’re The One That I Want and we’ve seen him on a bloody bus for what seemed like years. Oh and there’s of course Jeremy Kyle – who could forget Kyle.

Speaking of Jeremy Kyle, well he’s not part of the new Foxy Bingo plans. GVC Holdings, the owners of the brand, are blowing £10million on their new campaign and that means no change left over to sponsor the bumpers around the top early morning TV show. Jezza may be a big star on ITV but even he’s no match for a Hollywood A-List endorsement.

Heather Graham isn’t the first celebrity to endorse Foxy Bingo, but she is a significant step up on Katie Price who was on the site a few years back and even the stars of TOWIE who appeared on the site last year.

However an A-List Celebrity isn’t a sure fire way to success. Mel B’s arrival at Costa Bingo wasn’t well received whilst other celeb endorsements over the years have rapidly vanished once the pay cheques were cashed. In fact only Barbara Windsor (Queen Of Bingo at Jackpotjoy) and Verne Troyer (The Boss at Bgo.com) seem to be worthy of note.

RIP Northern Foxy

Reports suggest that Heather Graham’s presence plus the £10million campaign are part of a massive Foxy Bingo and Foxy Casino relaunch. It’s exciting times for the brand, but in our opinion it’s also the death of a bingo icon. Foxy will just never be the same again.

It’ll be interesting to see how the new campaign is received by TV audiences and the like, but more importantly how regular players see the changes.

For years players have been playing at a site watched over by a friendly, accessible, “one of their own”, character. Now there’s an A-List celebrity coining it in instead. If games are cut, bonuses are lost and prizes reduced then players will suggest it’s because Foxy are paying for Ms Graham’s wages.

The new Foxy Bingo TV advert will be on at 8.15pm on 9th March. Remember the day as it’ll be the day a bingo icon will die. RIP Northern Foxy!
